WARREN BDM Warren Steel Holdings LLC, which owns the former Republic Steel and RG Steel property, and the Western Reserve Port Authority have an agreement to donate the large swath of land to the port authority.
“We are going through our due diligence as we speak,” said port authority CEO John Moliterno, who the port authority board in January authorized to negotiate terms of the gift.
The property with a rich steelmaking past is nearly 1,000 acres that stretches almost 2 miles along Pine Avenue SE and includes portions of Warren, Niles, Howland and Warren Township.
The port authority became involved at the urging of JobsOhio, the state’s private nonproft economic development agency.

Years after back-to-back explosions at an aging steel factory in northern Ohio tossed workers into guardrails with bloodied faces and deep burns, the leaders of the facility met in Pittsburgh to decide the future of the company.
They summoned a new plant manager to a private aviation center at Pittsburgh International Airport in 2013 to look for ways to improve the troubled facility and increase output.
But it wasn’t the sale of steel that would keep the money flowing into the mill.

High levels of competence coupled by the cooperative attitudes of members of the Western Reserve Port Authority board of directors are resulting in good things for area business and our Mahoning Valley in general.
The latest appointment to the board, Poland businessman Ed Muransky, came in recent weeks and proves to us that county commissioners, who appoint board members to their multiyear terms, are serious about continuing to keep the bar high in order to continue the good work being done by the port authority.
Muransky, chairman of the board and founder of Muransky Companies, a business management company, also serves as founder, chairman, CEO and majority owner of the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in Boardman.

“We just need to be comfortable with how much property is involved. We need to be comfortable that we are able to take care of whatever potential liabilities that could come up with this,” port authority CEO John Moliterno said.
