WARREN/STERLING HEIGHTS In 2019, John Bernia set a goal. At the May 1 Warren Consolidated Schools Board of Education meeting, the school board voted 7-0 to appoint Bernia as the district’s next superintendent.
The teachers accuse the district of providing preferential treatment to up to eight male teachers in scheduling, pay, and assignments; offering additional compensation to male teachers through the teaching of additional courses; and causing disruptive changes to plaintiffs’ schedules while maintaining those of male teachers.

The lawsuit, filed by Livonia-based attorney Eric Stempien, alleges violation of the plaintiffs’ federal right to equal pay, the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and federal Title IX, which bars 'discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.'

CENTER LINE/WARREN/STERLING HEIGHTS It has been a school year like no other for the teachers, students and families across the state because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
School shutdowns, sanitization practices, mask mandates, a substitute teacher shortage, mental health concerns and more have impacted the learning process with everyone adapting as best they can.
Districts have offered hybrid formats, online-only programs and in-person instruction full time all while social distancing and trying to keep staff and students safe.
Schools have been staying afloat financially with three federal relief bills two under President Donald Trump and a third under President Joe Biden to assist public schools across the state, although the districts have not received all the funding yet.
