material effect on him in the polling as you pointed out, but i do wonder when you have a warren and sanders on the debate stage, does he look as strong as them or does he look weaker than them. that s when i think you ll see change, if any. there s a question, susan. does he look stronger or weaker? i think weaker. not because of one gaif, it is cumulative effect of gaffes and debate performances thus far. i think he is looking more and more that he s not ready for prime time. and that s why this debate coming in two weeks is critical for the vice president. one, he is on with all of the top players. everyone is going to look for the right opening for him. it may be one of the places they can call him on getting a fact wrong when he is speaking, or it may be another flat debate performance which i don t think joe biden can afford. i think we have seen him start to not take off, which is a
things, have used deregulation as a major talking point. deregulation is the kind of thing that tends to be popular when that s all you say. when you point out the effects of it and when democrats say things like, you know, that air and water with getting dirtier, that could cause some concern among regular voters. 2020, we ve got another debate coming up next month. only ten candidates qualify, means they re all going to be on the same stage. and as you go into it, the polls showing biden remains a strong leader there. his really closest competition, warren and sanders, what is the pressure on the other candidates who are further behind to turn that debate into sort of a make-or-break movement to move beyond the low single digits really? just making the debate stage for a lot of these candidates has been a victory. they re like, thank you, wave got that taken care of. but it is starting to look like
when you see voters respond they don t know a lot in the race besides warren and sanders. we ll see. i think this third debate will be key when we see front-runners. here is tim ryan to reacting to not ending up on the stage this morning, watch. obviously you want on. we re doing it the old-fashioned way. i m on the ground, meeting people, going to churches, shaking hands. i have to say i ve been critical of dnc, last go-round, four debates, hidden, really difficult for other candidates outside hillary clinton and joe biden to break through. this time around, i think dnc has had a fair and open process. they are going to have 12 debates during the primary. it s really hard because there s 24 people in the race. that s really what s happening.
your consistent message is that the democrats need a moderate candidate to beat president trump. joe biden i think you could put in that category. he maintains the lead. but you have tremendous support for both warren and sanders, who are left of center. is that a danger for the democratic party? it is a danger. i think trump s numbers really underscore this point, which is trump s numbers are down. they re like 40%. that means right now we re winning the center, which is what we want in 2018, which is how we flip the house. we have to make sure we put up a candidate who can hold the great american center. that s got to be a candidate, putting aside moderate or progressive, because in many ways, these labels don t mean anything. we need a candidate with new ideas who wants to build a big tent party and puts forth real solutions, not things that turn off voters. real things that can get done to improve the lives of the american people. that candidate will win the center and beat don
support. and we expect a new quinnipiac university poll in less than an hour. so that should be an some interesting either comparison or support for what we re seeing. yeah, it certainly should be: claire, a lot of people talking about the monmouth poll yesterday. again, a good poll but a very small sample and seems to be out of step with most other democratic polls. let s put the numbers back up again shows joe biden, again, after two debates, and months on the campaign trail, with a lot of these candidates, getting one of three votes among democratic party members, and elizabeth warren and bernie sanders back in second and third place. but it is, it s a three-person race right now, any way you look at it between biden, warren and sanders. no question. the monmouth poll was interesting. i can t imagine running even for a statewide office and spending money on a 300 person sample.
