Prince Philip was a mass of contradictions. Though born in Greece and the product of a melting pot of different nationalities, it’s hard to imagine anyone more quintessentially English. Royals are often accused of being out of touch, yet few will have encountered such a broad cross-section of society as the Duke of Edinburgh did during his lifetime. Grand, but essentially the poor relation – fittingly, he was born in a palace, but on the kitchen table.
