The Lubbock City Council on Tuesday approved a contract for the purchase and installation of an outdoor warning system. The outdoor warning system, according to the city, will provide coverage to all residents inside city limits. It will provide an audible warning tone in compliance with Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines. An outdoor warning system, which is usually referred to as tornado sirens, was included in the general fund in the city s current fiscal year budget. The city budgeted $1.1 million for this capital project. The purchase order approved Tuesday is with Joe Goddard Enterprises of Oklahoma for $710,415. City Manager Jarrett Atkinson previously said the sirens will be placed on existing public infrastructure, such as utility poles. He said a total of 39 sirens will be placed around the city.
