Wareham mourns passing of former police officer, selectman from COVID WAREHAM  Town officials are mourning the death of retired police officer and former selectman Dennis Damata this week. Selectmen observed a moment of silence during Tuesday’s meeting, and the Wareham Police Dept. has posted its regrets. Selectman Patrick Tropeano noted “with a heavy heart” Damata’s passing Tuesday at 68, saying he had died that afternoon at 4:05 p.m. from complications due to COVID. “It’s very sad. He fought a good fight but they just couldn’t get a handle on it.” He added, “Dennis was a good friend of mine for many, many years. He worked on the Board of Selectmen with me. You all know he was a retired police officer and he was recently working for the town as an inspector for the housing program.

Off-duty Wareham police converge in arresting wanted murder parolee

Wicked Local WAREHAM – Wareham police were aided by their off-duty brethren in arresting a Chelsea murder parolee wanted for a crime in Boston who had been reported to say he would not be going back to jail. Massachusetts Parole officers Nathan Mendes, Robert Mello, Timothy White, and Mychal Grady developed information that the wanted individual was staying at a house on Mason Street Extension in Onset, police said. The parole officers requested the assistance of the Wareham Police Dept. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at about 8:40 p.m. to serve the warrant. The wanted man was on parole for murder, and was currently under investigation for a recent crime in the Boston area, police said. In addition, information was received that the suspect had commented that he was not going to be taken back to jail.
