Treasurer candidate’s death leaves void in Johnstown community | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 JOHNSTOWN – The May 12 death of Thomas Suydam has left a void in his community and changed the political landscape of what had been shaping up to be one of the most consequential city treasurer races in recent decades. Thomas Suydam, a native of Gloversville, was a certified public accountant who had worked as a partner in the George J. Dorfman & Co. CPA firm, chief financial officer of plastic vial manufacturer Capitol Vial and had run a real estate agency in Mayfield on Route 30. After learning his incumbent City Treasurer Michael Gifford was not running for re-election in November after serving in the position since the 1990s,  Suydam filed a petition to run for the office as a Democrat.

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The city may do away with fees charged to city residents for holding garage sales in their own yards, after May 17. The Common Council will consider a resolution that night to get rid of the $2.50 fee currently charged by the City Clerk’s Office to conduct a garage sale at their home. Residents would still have to get a garage sale permit, but it would be free. “We weren’t collecting a ton of money,” City Clerk Carrie Allen said Thursday. She said the original idea for a fee was to prevent people from holding yearlong garage sales.

Johnstown Council votes to ban parking next to former Knox Junior High School | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS The Common Council voted unanimously Monday night to ban all parking at all times on the east side of South Perry Street in front of the former Knox Junior High School from the intersection of 1st Avenue to the intersection of 4th Ave. Monday night Jackson told the council the Greater Johnstown School District asked for the parking change in the wake of the district’s decision to move 5th and 6th grade students to the Knox building, creating the potential for an influx of traffic during school drop off and pick up times.

On March 26, the New York State Comptroller’s Office released an audit report regarding the city’s Information Technology practices. The report criticized the city for having no formal written contract with ATEC Group, a company the city paid $92,309 to between Jan. 1, 2019 and Jan. 15, 2020. According to the report, city officials seemingly had little understanding of how the money was being spent and for precisely what services.
