prevent a peace settlement and, unfortunately, the coalition in israeli doesn t want this. as you say, many of the israeli people are exhausted by war fare and exhausted by occupation and they want peace. the majority of israelis want peace. majority of israelis are very sensible, wonderful people. and i think we should build on that. but if the president is silent or simply lets things develop on their own, we are not using our influence intelligently and we have enormous influence with israelis if we use it. sam stein, jump in. yeah. i was going to ask about a totally different issue, but i m fascinated by this conversation. the news broke yesterday that president obama has told benjamin netanyahu he is willing to help negotiate a cease-fire between israeli and hamas. i m wondering, one, do you think it s wise for this administration to try to insert themselves at this point in
simple things like pass a budget or raise the debt ceiling spiral into criseses. partisan war fare is the norm. which is why a story about two congress mann men working to build a relationship is a political odd couple if there was one. jason chaffetz is a mormon republican from utah who has investigated the white house on issues from benghazi to the irs. also elijah cummings, the baptist democrat from baltimore who s considered one of the president s top allies in the house oversight committee. chaffetz spent a day with cummings touring his district in maryland and speaking to his constituents, a place where president obama dominated with 75% of the vote. as the washington post or thes in a washington fully engulfed in partisan warfare, the buddy day was an anomalous throwback to a time when members of congress of different political parties spent time together off the clock and liked one another.
washroom that this would undermine the idea of apartheid which was operating the absolute need to separate the races for social purposes. it s hard to imagine the climate of fear and oppression in mississippi that summer. how did people deal with the constant threat of violence? well, here s the thing. it was guerilla warfair. war fare. it s not constant. you were not always in danger. you had to know when you were in real danger. most of the time we were living in the base. you would make it out the to the courthouse. that was the place. you went to different layers over and over again. the local sheriff and the outreach of the league that are
together. i think back then first of all the size of it was so much greater. millions and upon millions, 18 million people in uniform. that just so much a large percentage of the population. everyone was involved. if you weren t here, you were back home helping in some way. today war fare has changed and it s smaller. what s important is the 1% that do serve, it s important to understand what they are doing and why they are doing it and important for them to understand it. today we have too many people who really don t think about why these men and women are doing what they do and the sacrifice they make. it s important for people to understand that. that these young people today i would argue are just as brave and courageous, going into places where they might sacrifice their lives. that hasn t changed. i m so proud of this young generation of young men and women we have and what they ve done. thank you so much, thank you for your service. thank you for doing this. i appreciate
