BEIJING, June 7 (Reuters) - China’s soybean imports rose in May from the previous month, customs data showed on Monday, as more cargoes from top supplier Brazil cleared customs.
China, the world’s top importer of soybeans, brought in 9.61 million tonnes of the oilseed in May, up 29% from 7.45 million tonnes in April, when some Brazilian shipments were delayed, data from the General Administration of Customs showed.
May’s imports were also up from 9.38 million tonnes in the same month a year ago.
“The figures were within market expectation. Imports from May-July are usually quite large each year. There were also some delayed cargoes,” said Wang Xiaoyang, analyst with Sinolink Futures.

Live hog futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange were last down 4.7% at 23,580 yuan ($3,663.94) per tonne. Analysts said large volumes of heavy pigs being sent to slaughter caused the weakness in spot prices, which have fallen sharply since the start of the year. Spot prices were around $18 to $20 per kilogramme on Tuesday. “The market expects that there will be more pigs going forward. Feed sales are pretty good, up from last year and also from the previous month. Most of the demand is from the pig sector,” said Sinolink Futures analyst Wang Xiaoyang.

China issued guidelines on Wednesday recommending the reduction of corn and soymeal in pig and poultry feed, a measure that could reshape the flow of grains into the world s top corn and soybean buyer.
China s corn prices surged more than a third in the most recent year following a drop in output and state stockpiles. The country started importing a lot more corn to compensate for the domestic deficit. So feed makers have already been switching to cheaper alternatives, especially wheat.

BEIJING, March 11 (Reuters) - China’s soymeal futures slumped on Thursday on growing concerns that a resurgence in African swine fever outbreaks in the country’s huge hog herd will hit demand for the key animal feed ingredient in coming months.
China’s most actively traded soymeal futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange for delivery in May fell 4.3% to 3,176 yuan ($488.78) per tonne in morning trade, closing down 3.56%, the biggest daily decline in more than two years.
