Along the busy Moi International Airport Road in Changamwe, Mombasa County, sinewy men chisel away at blocks of wood under the humidity of the hot mid-day sun.
For over 50 years, generations of artisans have converged in the huge makuti-thatched workshop under the banner of the Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative Society to practice their craft of turning the blocks of wood into beautiful pieces of art.

KURA representative, Eng. Benjamin Asin, who is the agency’s assistant director, said heavy rainfall pounding the area have made it impossible to continue with construction works as most parts of the road are flooded.
“Construction works can only resume after rainfall subsides. The type of soil in Thika cannot allow for road-building to continue under wet circumstances,” he stated.
Asin said the Authority, previously, had to deal with land encroachment, which led to delays in construction.
On the sewer line that has reportedly been damaged, leading to flowing of human waste onto the worksite, Asin said the agency will ask Thika Water and Sewerage Company to repair the affected section so that the contractor can resume duty.

KDF Sergeant lynched for ‘greeting woman in Utawala’

A KDF soldier was killed by a mob on Christmas eve after a confrontation with a couple in Utawala estate, Nairobi. The 38-year-old soldier was in the company of his brother and were heading home after a night out at Fahari Hotel when the incident occurred.
They met a couple on the way and the KDF Sergeant allegedly greeted the woman leading to a confrontation with the man. The couple’s distress call attracted six people who came to their rescue and attacked the soldier. The deceased’s brother managed to escape and called the police. By the time officers from Embakasi Police Station arrived the soldier was dead.
