Walters & Cohen in running for EU Mies Award

Walters & Cohen’s extension to Newnham College, Cambridge has been nominated for the prestigious EU Mies van der Rohe Award. The Dorothy Garrod Building is the first project by a UK architect known to be in the running for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture which is open to UK and EU-based architects and to projects across Europe. The first of two longlists will be announced next week. The pandemic has set back the award’s normal biennial schedule as judges are unable to visit the nominated buildings. The eligibility period will be extended, with the second longlist published in September, a shortlist revealed in January 2022 and the winners announced in April 2022.

Jane Drew Prize for women in architecture awarded to Kate Macintosh

Scottish architect Kate Macintosh has been awarded this year s Jane Drew Prize in recognition of her contribution to elevating the profile of women in architecture. Macintosh, now retired, was selected in celebration of her work in public architecture and advocation for the use of buildings as a tool for social justice since the 1960s. The Jane Drew Prize is awarded annually by the Architects Journal and The Architectural Review as part of its W awards series, formerly known as the Women in Architecture awards. Previous winners of the prize, which is named after modernist pioneer Jane Drew, include the likes of Denise Scott Brown, Amanda Levete and Pakistan s first female architect, Yasmeen Lari.

AJ 40 under 40: Feilden Fowles 14 December 2020 By Richard Waite, illustration by Simon Hayes Shortlisted for the 2019 Stirling Prize, the AJ 40 under 40 practice has retained its low-tech, environmentally friendly principles while growing through a series of significant competition wins It is no understatement to say it has been an extraordinary couple of years for Feilden Fowles. As well as picking up a clutch of highly prized jobs, the 11-year-old practice’s blossoming reputation was bolstered further when it made the 2019 RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist with its Yorkshire Sculpture Park visitor centre. Set up by Fergus Feilden, 38, and Edmund Fowles, 36, the company now boasts 21 staff, all of whom are under 40. Despite its growth, the practice has held onto the low-tech, low-impact, environmentally focused design principles showcased in its very first project, Ty Pren, a Welsh passive longhouse clad in local larch and slate (2009).
