Leigh Vogel, Getty Images Chris Jones, a former assistant dean of graduate education at MIT, is running for governor in Arkansas. Growing up, Chris Jones was fascinated by the concept of time travel. He would stay up late at night thinking about what would happen if he could travel back or forward in time. He loved shows like Quantum Leap and Star Trek, so it didn’t surprise his parents when he declared that he wanted to become an astronaut at just 8 years old. And while not being able to hear out of his right ear halted that dream, it didn’t stop him from pursuing an academic career in science.

Jim Crow laws that took root throughout the South had found their way across much of the nation by the early decades of the 1900s, many of them aimed at segregation, whether in the military, marriage, public facilities, restaurants or schools. Yet, in a world clouded by apprehension, fear and suspicion, bright spots prevailed. I hope the people who receive the Fellowship, whether they stay at the lab or go elsewhere, see themselves as someone who can be a role model and a participant in increasing and enhancing the number of African Americans in science. Charles H Chuck James III, who ran C H James & Co , one of nation s oldest Black-owned businesses, dead at 62

Provided Charles “Chuck” H. James III, who chaired one of the nation’s oldest Black-owned businesses, has died at 62. Mr. James, who lived in the Chicago area for extended periods, died last month at his Atlanta home as a result of heart problems, according to his sister Sarah Irby. The fourth generation in his family to run C.H. James & Co., a Charleston, West Virginia, company founded by his great-grandfather in the 1880s, Mr. James oversaw a business that supplied produce to many restaurants, schools, grocery stores and hospitals in the Mountain State. He was credited with diversifying the company’s holdings.
