A fire April 22 destroyed the historic garage and damaged a second historic outbuilding at Scotty s Castle in Death Valley, according to a National Park Service news release.
The historic main house and other surrounding historic structures were unharmed.
Construction contractors discovered and reported an active fire in the garage and long shed buildings Thursday morning. Contractors on the scene attempted to stop the fire from spreading further into the long shed, according to the release.
The fire was mostly contained by the time firefighters from Death Valley National Park and the Beatty Volunteer Fire Department arrived.
Firefighters then monitored for hotspots and stabilized the remains of the structures.

Two historic buildings in Death Valley National Park’s Scotty’s Castle area were consumed by fire Thursday morning, authorities said, and they’re investigating the cause.
A garage and another outbuilding in the area, closed to the public for six years, were destroyed by the fire, according to a Facebook post from the National Park Service. The Scotty’s Castle district was the 1920s vacation home of two Chicago millionaires, and is rumored to have been situated atop a gold mine once owned by owned by Walter “Scotty” Scott.
