Thank you for coming on such a chilly day, and im delighted to present perhaps 25, 30 minutes of comments and the interaction with you on the questions you have. Im also very glad to see jim phillips here. Ive worked on terrorism issues with jim for it must be a quarter century now, and there are very few people that write with the intelligence and prudence that jim phillips does. Heres a couple reasons why i wanted to write this book, with the way terrorism encounters the citizen. I remember back in 1980 reading some clippings many newspapers, it was in newspapers, it was in the chicago area. And a woman was looking out her window near her home, and she saw a van pull up. And in that van there proved to be some nine different people. And they looked rather like an athletics team, you know . The jogging uniforms and the bags. But as she looked out her window, this lady, mrs. Walter jacobson, decides that she should be a little nervous about this. Thered been some robberies in the area
Writers and we dont always associate television with good writing, especially in local news. But you always were a good writer but he wrote in the short form a perspective, what compelled you to tell your story . I had, rick, no idea that writing the book. Never have thought about doing it. Of course, never have tried to do it. When i retired maybe five years ago for the first time hes like the Michael Jordan of local television broadcasting. [laughter] my retirement is often compulsory. As the hair gets a greater, the less management wants to be part of the team. But the first time i retired i was ready to retire but it was after about 45 years in the business, and i just went off thinking about myself. I had been under so many years of such severe deadlines that i never had a chance to even think about what i was really doing to myself and what i did, and, for others to know. The more i just thought about it, the more i kind of took notes about things. My memory came back and i went
In a long time, and he is someone i listen to for a long time. I would highly recommend the book. And as a policymaker, obviously was policy, what can be learned from the policies in the last 30 to 40 years may have contributed to this and where to go from here. I think its really wonderful inquisitive and instructive. Its called after agent, ever new. Its written by archbishop john glenn. One of the Great American bishops, intellectuals. He studies the structures of the Catholic Church and how best to reform them. And someone that oversees this very large bureaucracy and many structures and very often asked why is it the way it is, how can we do this better. I think that all institutions can and should go through reforms. So this is a very, very thoughtful book. Its in addition to many other books that he has written and published and he is someone that i admire a great deal. Is a former arch bishop emeritus in seven cisco.
