A string of suspected hit murders, bogus police and the closure of a police station in one of Gqeberha’s most violent and dangerous policing precincts has left residents of Walmer Township living in fear.
South Africa is one of the driest countries in the world and it is facing a 17% water supply shortfall in less than a decade yet billions of litres of clean water are going down the drain every year due to leaking pipes and neglected infrastructure in towns and cities nationwide.
Calls for the reopening of the Fountain Avenue police station in crime-ridden Walmer Township will now come at a much higher cost as vandals have stripped every available metal from the building, including the roof. The station was closed in 2017 due to non-maintenance, which posed a safety hazard.
