KENT Standing on one of the highest points of Illinois, the Black Hawk War Monument has been a remembrance of the war that took place on Kellogg’s Grove near Kent.
The monument, erected in 1886 by officials in Stephenson County, stands as a grateful remembrance of the heroic men who fought during the Black Hawk War.
Overlooking the valley of the Yellow Creek, the monument has been crumbling over time. A popular site for tourists along U.S. Route 20 west of Freeport, there is a shelter house that serves as a gathering place for reunions, birthday and graduation parties. There is a simple piece of paper on the side of the shelter for people to sign up to reserve the spot.
