A group of University of Maryland students are petitioning to remove the late state Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. s name from the university s administration building, citing a record of racist and homophobic comments.
The Diamondback reports the students are seeking the removal in line with a University System of Maryland policy adopted in December. The new policy allows community members to ask for the names of campus buildings to be changed or removed.
The university announced the renaming of its administration building last June. The drive to take his name off the building predates his Jan. 15 death.
Family of Maryland Football Player Who Died Gets Settlement By Catherine Scott | February 1, 2021
After a two-year-long process, a family will be awarded a $3.5 million settlement from Maryland after their son, Jordan McNair, died during a university football practice.
The Board of Public Works voted unanimously during a meeting Wednesday to approve the request from the University of Maryland, College Park for the full settlement of all claims made by Martin McNair and Tonya Wilson, the parents of McNair.
“No amount of money is ever gonna bring back Jordan to his family,” Comptroller Peter Franchot, D, said at the meeting. “The McNair family entrusted the University of Maryland with Jordan’s care and quite frankly, a number of people failed him.”

Nearly two and a half years after the University of Maryland vowed to accept legal and moral responsibility for the death of Jordan McNair, state officials approved a $3.5 million settlement between the school and the football player s family Wednesday.
All the parties, including the school and the state attorney general s office, had signed off on the settlement, and Wednesday s approval from the Board of Public Works - the entity charged with overseeing state spending, including contracts and legal settlements - was the final step in the process.
