Construction on a $20 million apartment hotel in Mount Maunganui will restart next month after Covid delays pushed the project a year behind schedule. The Quest Mount Maunganui development is on the corner of Rata St and Maunganui Rd, which was previously occupied by the Breakers cafe and bar for more than a decade.
The development, including 40 apartments and four ground-floor retail spaces, was expected to open early this year.
Thirteen sections from stage two have already been sold. Hoult Contractors has been awarded the job for stages one and two, which involves creating the infrastructure to get the sections ready for builders. Buildings at Manukura School’s former kura awa campus were being demolished and the gym was coming down, said Wallace Development Manawatū regional manager Vanessa Thompson. It was hoped concrete blocks from the campus could be used as part of fill, because the ground would need to be raised by a metre on average across the site. That work started this week. “It’s got to be very significantly engineered,” she said.
