Everybody wanted for over 50 years and we got it done. Thats donald trump once again taking credit for the end of roe v. Wade. The former president made several false claims about the issue during both of his Campaign Rallies yesterday. Well have more on that in just a moment. Also ahead well go through the chaos overnight on the campus of ucla after a group of counterprotesters attacked a propalestinian encampment. And meanwhile Secretary Of State Antony Blinken is pressing hamas to accept a Gaza Ceasefire deal. Well bring you the latest on those negotiations. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this thursday, may 2nd. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. And well begin this morning with the unrest on the campus of ucla there in Southern California. Police officers are on campus at this moment and have ordered the crowd of over 1,000 people to disperse. But a large group still remains protesting the war in gaza. As of now there have not been any arrests.
appointed justices, passes the shelby county rule, undermines section 5, the preclearance provision, the centerpiece of the 1965 voting rights act. that bangs the gong, john, for what happens in the states, both in terms of the states directly covered and in other republican-controlled states, by signaling the supreme court wasn t going to get in their way. we saw, initially, more voting purges, poll closings, voter id laws. after 2020, this wave of 19 states that passed 34 laws, making it harder to vote, all on a party line majority rules basis. there is no state that has a filibuster. all of the efforts to make it tougher to vote have unfolded on party line, majority rule votes, but because of manchin and sinema s refusal to exempt voting rights from the filibuster, the one place where you now need to bipartisan supermajority to protect voting rights, the senate. that structural imbalance is the wall democrats will run into today and, in fact, is the wall
[ applause ] my next guests are governors of two important states that democrats are trying to win back in 2020. the they are hoping hoping to rebuild the brew wall democrats used to have. please welcome pennsylvania governor tom wolf and wisconsin governor tony evers in the house at the same time. two winners. listen, you are two governors that have been figuring out a way to win as democrats in states that trump won. i don t care what anybody else, you are the experts at how you pull in off in the swing states. and the first thing wove been talking about the racist attacks high pressure. how do you think the attacks play in your state? and what impact did this behavior from the president going to have in 020. a great question. first of all obviously it was a racist rant on his part. but i think you know everybody knows that s part of his dna. and so i believe to win
compromise he said the president was doing a defeat lap in the rose garden the other day. is the democratic party on the same page when it comes to funding a border wall or will pelosi will see fractures. the idea of a wall is still unenormously unpopular those comments of fencing or repairing existing structure that s a lot of majority of democrats would support. the possibility that democrats will give the president a significant amount of money for border security or maybe as high as the number he s talking about, $5.7 billion but not for a wall democrats would like to prove b putting their money where their mouth is they are serious of border security what they need to do is convince the american people and convince thoroughly that border security and wall are not the same thing.
president republican 53% blame republicans. the president has nobody to negotiate with and this drags on. that number is going to close. until that number closes, i don t see the democrats changing their behavior. al al calling a crisis. he wants funding for that wall democrats and republicans can come to the table and figure something out there. is another migrant caravan apparently growing and building and set to leave central america. brian: honduras. ainsley: griff jenkins is going to be live for us. steve: tomorrow that s when it is supposed to set off. regarding the government shut down, today is day 24. the president has made it very clear the democrats have got to come back to the table. just negotiate. nancy pelosi last week was very clear. not actually 10 days ago. not a dollar for that wall. and here you can see some of the things going on in mexico. there is no end in sight. and so, what you see on
