I am a civilian who has read extensively of the hardships encountered by our military personnel and their families. I have learned of the joys, the sufferings, the valour achievements and the costly sacrifices.
Recently, I was again awakened of their plight when I read Derrick Nearing’s Walking Them Home: A Soldier’s Journey in Postwar Rwanda.

Petty Officer (Ret.) Nearing, MMM, CD, served as a medical technician and physician assistant in Somalia with the Canadian Airborne Regiment, followed a year later with a tour to Rwanda with 2 Field Ambulance. He was deployed to Bosnia with 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He ended his career doing two tours in Afghanistan with 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment and 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment.
