this is cnn breaking news. . i m victor blackwell, thank you for staying with us. we are of course covering the breaking news, this man hunt happening right now for the man who opened fire at a july 4th parade in highland park, illinois. he s described as armed and dangerous. at least six people are dead. more than two dozen have been taken to hospitals. now, a briefing a short time ago, police described this suspect. the suspect is currently described as a male, white, approximately 18 to 20 years old with longer black hair, a small build and wearing a white or blue t-shirt. a firearm has been recovered from the scene. it does appear he was shooting from a roof. the roof that he was shooting from, i don t have that information right now. we now know that the fbi is assisting in this investigation. and authorities are asking of course anyone with video to contact highland park police. we ve known the video in situations like this has been crucial. cnn s adrienne broad
he was read his miranda warnings, offered attorneys, et cetera, he went into details about what he had done. he admitted to what he had done. reporter: the county sheriffs office also revealed that there were red flags about the shooter well before monday s mass killing. in april of 2019, police were called about a suicide attempt of his. five months later, a relative contacted police after the suspect threatened to quote kill everyone in the family. but still, he was able to obtain the illinois equivalent of a gun license in 2020. today the prosecutor tried to explain it. there was never a firearm restraining order. that s what i had used the term red flag. that type of order mr. crimo has never been involved in that type of order. that s an order where family members and other individuals can go to a court and ask that somebody have firearms taken and not be allowed to piurchase firearms. that did not happen in mr. crimo s case. cnn security correspondent, josh gamb
american plague. live from london, this is cnn newsroom with max foster. it is tuesday, july 5th, 3:00 a.m. in highland park, illinois. the chicago suburb dealing with yet another tragic mass shooting. at least six people are dead, more than two dozen wounded and a suspect is in police custody now. the shooter started just after 10:00 a.m. local time monday as people lined the parade route along central avenue in the suburb north of chicago. we have video from the scene, but we have to warn you that it is disturbing. [ gunfire ] investigators believe the gunman climbed an unsecured ladder in an alley and opened fire from a rooftop. police say the gun was a high powered rifle, the attack appears to be random and intentional. the suspect was arrested without incident a few hours later identified as robert crimo iii. he had posted anonymous videos on lineneighboring name awake the rapper. the investigation will continue. charges have not been approved yet at this time
