vinny, walk with me inside. i want to show folks your home. we ve been doing this all day. showing people the inside of homes of people that have been totally ruined, totally demolished because of this flooding. it s important for folks to see you got it, tim? i will give tim a bit of help up the steps. it s important for folks to see the destruction that is left by these high floodwaters. one of the reasons why is because the water just got so incredibly high. vinny was recounting to me come over here, i want you to tell them yourself, you knew ida was headed this way. right. but why didn t you evacuate? in the past, we were given notice ahead of time, days notice that there s a storm coming. this one came so fast. the only warnings we received were to shelter in place, watch out for flash floods. we know flash flooding is streets and bridges, things like that.
neighborhood where we are in new orleans. it could be days or weeks before power is restored here. and walk with me. i ll show you why. you ll notice power lines are down. not only are power lines down behind me. this once big beautiful oak tree blanketing the home that s here, even along the street and on other streets in this neighborhood, you ll notice oak trees are down everywhere. now, there is a sign of hope in the metro area, not in this neighborhood where we are, about 10% of the power has been restored. for example, in the french quarter. but more than 900,000 power outages are still spread out across new orleans. and no power, no electricity, that s the big problem for folks who decided to remain in this neighborhood. we spoke with a gentleman who s lived here ten years. we met him outside on his front porch. he came outside to enjoy the cool morning breeze because inside it s hot. he has no power, no electricity,
the benefits of voting at home as we describe it, and the reason we say voting at home is because while voters were receiving their ballots through the mail at home, there are options to submit that ballot back including dropping it off in person at a low voting location, the clerk s office, a drop box, or using the postal service to deliver it back. the great thing about voting at home as you have those options. as you mentioned, you re not restricted to the days and times the government sets for you. you can do it at night, your kitchen table, like i do with my children. i have an eight and ten year old. every election, they help me with my ballot. they ask me questions like what does governor do? what does the mayor do? what s a school board? i use it as a civics lesson every single time a ballot arrives. we have that experience every election and they go walk with me down to the drop box or the mailbox and submitted back in. the opportunity really with
Howe Bridge Crematorium staff and Captain Sir Tom Moore, inset (Picture: PA) STAFF at Howe Bridge Crematorium in Atherton are honouring late pandemic hero Captain Sir Tom Moore by walking 100 laps ahead of the date of what would have been his 101st birthday. Westerleigh Group, which operates Howe Bridge Crematorium, is challenging staff at its 35 sites nationwide, to come up with creative ways of supporting the Captain Tom Foundation. The group has also set up a Just Giving page and is inviting anyone from the communities served by them to pay their own tribute to Sir Tom by donating, perhaps in memory of their own loved ones.
