Bike Walk Macon hoping for Complete Streets

The Macon-Bibb County Commission will vote on the ordinance Tuesday. June 4, 2021 The executive director of Bike Walk Macon, Rachel Umana, presented the policy to commissioners last week. A Complete Streets policy would direct transportation planners and engineers to design street plans with all users in mind that means not just car drivers, but pedestrians, bicyclists, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. “We’ll look at our streets and not only say that we’re committed to it but actually design streets to look at where these crashes are happening, where are these fatalities happening,” Umana said. “Let’s make sure when there’s new road projects that are happening on them, that we’re building streets so that this won’t keep happening.”

Capital to Coast campaign raises awareness on bike safety

Listen to the content of this post: MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) Bike Walk Macon, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and local law enforcement came together to make sure people are educated on bike safety. The ‘Capital to Coast’ campaign is this week. The tour stops in five different Georgia cities, and Macon was on the list for Wednesday. Jimmy Sumner is the Deputy Director for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. He says the goal of the campaign is to promote bike safety. “This is something we should practice everyday of every year. Our goal is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on our road ways,” says Sumner. “This is one of the things we great Georgians to, and that’s bicycle crashes.”

Bike Walk Macon needs volunteers for Love your street project. Listen to the content of this post: MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bike Walk Macon’s Love Your Street project starts this weekend. The project aims to help improve biking and walking on the street at four locations. Cherry Street serves as the first location where organizers and local artist Erin Hawkins will create a mural at a crosswalk. Bike Walk Macon partnered with Hawkins to add a pop of color to crosswalks. The mural showcases lyrics from a Little Richard song in which he mentions Macon as his home. Each mural will be unique in alerting drivers they are approaching a crosswalk.
