Roque made the statement after the Senate expressed its intention to talk to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to exempt Diaz from tax following her historic win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this week.
In his press briefing on Thursday, July 29, Roque said all Filipinos wanted Diaz to keep the entire prize that she earned after winning the country’s first Olympic Gold.
“Walang Pilipino na gustong buwisan ang mga pabuya na matatanggap ni Hidilyn. Pero alam ko rin po bilang abogado, para magkaroon ng tax exemption, kinakailangan po ng batas (No Filipino wanted to tax the cash incentives that Hidilyn received. But as a lawyer, I know that a law is needed to allow tax exemption),” he said.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque made the statement as the government extended and expanded the existing travel ban to 34 countries with confirmed cases of new COVID-19 strains until the end of the month.
In his press briefing on Thursday, Roque said President Duterte’s decision to allow Filipinos from abroad to enter the Philippines is based on their right to travel.
“Nanindigan na po ang Presidente: Walang Pilipino na pupuwedeng mapigilang umuwi (We won’t stop any Filipino from coming home),” he said.
“That is the right to travel, recognized already in jurisprudence laid down by the Philippines Supreme Court. Karapatang pantao po iyan ng lahat ng Pilipino (That is the right of every Filipino),” he added.

This comes after the UK variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 was detected on a Filipino who recently traveled to the UAE. “Because of this discovery, chances are yes, there will be travel restrictions imposed on the UAE. Antayin na lang po natin ang pormal na desisyon ng ating Presidente which will be forthcoming very soon,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said at a press briefing when asked for comment on the development that pushed the Department of Health to call for travel restrictions on the UAE.
