The landscape plan involves splitting the reserve into three areas – Park of Silence, Park of Healing and Park of Reflection. The design is founded on kaupapa Māori concepts, and includes four interconnected takarangi (double spiral forms), which form a unifying strand.

A new draft landscape plan has been released for Takapūneke Reserve at Akaroa. Ōnuku Rūnanga chairman Rik Tainui believed the reserve would become a beautiful place where people would want to visit. “We’ve come a long way from fighting over a dump.” The rūnanga has been working with the council for about two years to develop the plan.

Gabriel Te Moana: “Many hands have moulded me through my journey in life and a lot of them aren’t here now. But I certainly acknowledge those people who were beside me for those 40 years.”
Gabe Te Moana can laugh that after nearly 40 years on “this Māori journey” that he has “just about got to the point where I know a little bit”. Becoming a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori and governance was a reflection of his experience, he said, before deflecting the tribute. “Many hands have moulded me through my journey in life and a lot of them aren’t here now. But I certainly acknowledge those people who were there beside me for those 40 years, within our Maori world.”

Listen up, all of you at the back of the classroom. We ve always loved visiting our cuzzies across the dutch (sorry, ditch). For a lot of us it had almost become Hobbit forming (we re even starting to talk like them, what with all of this inflationary bubble business).
But we ve been worlds apart for more than a year now, thanks to you-know-what, and much has happened in that time. There s a whole heap of new attractions, hotels, restaurants, places to discover and old favourites with which to reconnect.

Rafting on the Landsborough River is a perfect choice for getting away from technology and people.
Richie says: “I’ve flown through this area a few times and have seen how spectacular it is. You have to fly in or hike over the Brodrick Pass to start the trip, then you can spend a few days rafting and camping your way out. I’d love to do this.”
Stuff Travel says: If there is one must-do for New Zealanders, especially for those who love wilderness and nature, it would have to be rafting the Landsborough River on the West Coast in summer. A guided adventure, it begins with a helicopter ride into the first comfortable camp before you begin a three-day adventure through untouched bush, rugged valleys and fun rapids.
