CSPAN2 Key Capitol Hill Hearings October 22, 2014

We long anticipated was a gas guest and waiting for a match to it. In a sense if this outbreak is in the past, no its not. Is it the same virus in a different setting . It could be. But i will share more with you and what i think of that. We are making this up as we go but that isnt new to Public Health. Weve done that in the past. Its not a bad thing we just have to be mindful we are making it up as we go. And giving that we have doing that we have to become more uncomfortable huggable with uncertainty. I reject the idea that you cant tell people you dont know because you are afraid youll scare them. There is a complete literature on miscommunication that says people are never frightened by if you tell them you dont know this is what im going to learn or this is something and it might be scary. So the literature shows over and over again there are two things that will turn them to be very concerned if not scared. One is if you tell them with certainty a and candidate with uncertainty

Severely or fatal crashes. Turns in general are a big issue for us. So left turns is in the Police Report and then the locations of the places where we have signals is information that we have. So we put those two together and that is a very simple crash profile that we call left turns at signal intersections but they become more complex with more data. I will give you a few examples. So, this is just a little more information about the data that we do have information about the age of the pedestrian involved, but we dont have the, the police do not collect data about whether or not that person has a disability. National data has shown generally that those vulnerable populations are when crashes happened they are more likely to result in longterm disability fatality, or severe injury. This is what we care very much about and when you see that how we prioritize our location for injuries, that was a place we prioritized because over time those vulnerable population are at risk. So a few

Not a surprise to anybody. Once we have that focus of those 70 miles, then we really needed to understand whats happening, who is involved, and what should we do about it. Thats what the focus is of walk first. The first thing we needed to focus on is now we have a sense of where the problem was and what was happening. We looked at 2300 crash records from the Police Department and we began to categorize them into what we call crash profiles. Crash profiles really tell a story about the trends on the network. And we draw from two data sets to get this information. One is the Police Records themselves that tell us who was involved and what time of day and the other data set is all the information we have about the physical environment in the city. So one example is left turns at signal lights at intersection. Left turns account for 30 percent of severely or fatal crashes. Turns in general are a big issue for us. So left turns is in the Police Report and then the locations of the places w

Good day to you, im Peter Alexander wrapping up this week for my friend, Andrea Mitchell. Today tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members across egypt are refusing to back down to the interim government guided by the nations military. Once again there have been deadly consequences there. Nbcs ayman mohyeldin, we want to get to him right away, he is live for us in cairo right now. Ayman, more casualties after what was already the worst mass killing in that countrys modern history.
