The Waipukurau Library has been closed indefinitely as it was deemed earthquake prone. Despite strengthening as part of structural and renovation works in 2015, the Waipukurau Library, built in the late 1940s, has been closed indefinitely. The total cost of the work on the library was about $557,872, as well as additional costs incurred in establishing a temporary facility. The hall work cost about $849,760, with both projects costing a total ofmore than $1.4 million.

The Waipukurau Memorial Hall being has met less than 20 per cent of the New Building Standard. The council was investigating the 2015/2016 strengthening works and the role of the different parties involved to determine what happened – it’s not yet known when the investigation will be complete.

Central Hawke s Bay District Council is set to open a regional digital business hub, while at the same time finding a place the Waipukurau library service can call home for at least the next five years, thanks to funding secured through the Provincial Growth Fund.

Hawke s Bay readers can t get enough of Jack Reacher if the number of loans from our public libraries in 2020 are anything to go by. Lee Child s 2019 addition to the thriller series Blue Moon was borrowed from the Napier and Taradale Libraries 175 times, more than any other book.
Blue Moon was also the most borrowed book from the Central Hawke s Bay District Libraries (Waipawa and Waipukurau) in 2020, and the second-equal most borrowed book from the Hastings District Libraries (Flaxmere, Hastings and Havelock North).
