I do not think so,” Annand wrote to the board. “It is unfortunate that I am inclined towards writing this, but [the victim and her husband] have put me in a situation whereby I do not even like to go to my own house as I do not know what damage they might do next. Rain has brought some relief to Central Otago with the area being moved from a total ban on all fires to a restricted season today.
The central zone includes Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Wanaka, Lake Hawea, Naseby, Ranfurly, Kurow, Otematata, Omarama and Middlemarch.
There has been a total fire ban in the area since December 18 last year. The shift to a restricted season begins from 8am.

Advertisement The restricted fire season means people in the area may be able to light an outdoor fire if they apply for a permit and follow the conditions listed on it.
The firefighters used hand tools and thermal imaging equipment to extinguish the remaining hotspots, and had the blaze fully contained about 4pm. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokeswoman Jill Higgison said no properties had been damaged or threatened by the fire, and no injuries had been reported. It was unclear how the fire started and whether it was deemed suspicious, she said. An investigator was heading to the scene early on Friday to determine the cause.
