“If it had been another era he would have just been sent to an institution,” Tregurtha said. She is really proud of his determination. The Waimataitai School pupil competed in the games two years ago when he was living in Tauranga and was a member of the Bay of Plenty team which kindled his interest to enter again. Finn will compete in sprinting, athletics, archery, touch rugby, crossfit, cricket and golf. “I’m looking forward to it. Running is my favourite sport,” he said.

“It s a short, nasty little bug.’’ At least one teacher had caught the bug as well, Young said. “We’re all very conscious at the moment of having staff members go home because of Covid, so people don t need any convincing to stay home.” Young suspected the bug would have spread further if not for the measures introduced to protect the school community from Covid-19, and the heightened awareness about personal hygiene people have developed in response to the virus. “We’re very switched on to personal hygiene here. We have hand sanitiser in every classroom, and the cleaners are doing an especially thorough job on door handles and things.”
