Born in Hawaii in 1890, he helped popularize the sport in the early 20th century, after Christian missionaries had almost wiped it out for good. He took his iconic 16-foot board that weighed over 100 pounds all over the world to perform in surfing exhibitions that ended up bringing wave riding to the global mainstream.
