COLOMBO(News 1st): Plantation workers staged protests on Sunday seeking an increment of their daily wage up to Rs 1000.
The National Estate Workers Union had organized a protest in Passara insisting that they would not give up their struggle until their daily wages are increased to Rs 1000.
Meanwhile, plantation workers in Matale also staged a protest along the Elkaduwa – Wattegama main road citing similar demands.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Times newspaper reported that the government has decided to Gazette a minimum wage of Rs. 1,000 for estate workers.

COLOMBO (News1st): The Wages Board will meet on Wednesday to decide on increasing the wages of estate workers up to Rs 1000, labour minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has said.
The minister told reporters yesterday that he had attempted to sign a collective agreement between employees and estate trade unions.
“Since a consensus was not reached, I had no alternative but to approach the Wages Board to provide these salaries,” he noted.
However, trade unions have expressed concerns over this move.
“We know that estate employers are not willing to provide the 1000 rupee wage,” Sri Wasantha Abeykoon, the Propaganda Secretary of the Estate Workers Centre centre.

Colombo (News 1st); The Government will be compelled to impose a minimum wage for estate workers as per the provisions of the Wages Board Ordinance, if an agreement cannot be reached with respect to increasing the daily wages of estate workers to Rs.1000/-, warned Sri Lanka’s Labour Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The Minister had stressed on the matter at a meeting with the chairmen and representatives of estate trade unions on Friday (15).
At the meeting, a final agreement was not reached with respect to increasing the daily wages of estate workers to Rs. 1000/-.
