“After the first motion was defeated, I immediately tried to offer an amended version to include all of the social studies books with the exception of the AP government textbook, but I did not receive a second,” school board member Julie Hummel said. “This resulted in none of the social studies textbooks being adopted. This was not my intention or my preference.”
With the school board not agreeing to purchase new social studies textbooks, the schools lose their chance to buy new textbooks for another year, meaning that students will be using textbooks that are at least 12 years old with outdated material.
The Williamsburg-James City County School Board unanimously approved a four-year contract, from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2022, for Superintendent Olwen Herron at their meeting on Tuesday.
