NOAA mulls moving start of Atlantic hurricane season up to May 15 Matthew Cappucci, The Washington Post Feb. 26, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail Atlantic hurricane season doesn t officially start until June 1, but that could soon change. A committee at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is working to decide whether the start date of Atlantic hurricane season should be moved forward to May 15. The change would reflect an increasing tendency for early-season storms to form ahead of the internationally agreed-upon June 1 conventional start date in an effort to respond to observed trends. The National Hurricane Center has already announced plans to begin issuing routine tropical weather outlooks starting on May 15.

The mission of APTS is to ensure a strong and financially sound public television system and help member stations provide essential public services in education, public safety, and civic leadership for their communities. “It s an honor to be selected by my public television peers to serve in this leadership position on the APTS board,” said Elkins. “I look forward to our work ahead as the board focuses on increasing federal and state funding for our stations so they can continue to expand critical services to their communities, including NextGen TV and broadcast Internet educational services.”
