Aaja Nachle’s ‘Pravasee’ dance project an ode to migrants Thursday, February 25, 2021 Rizwan Mohammad
Aaja Nachle earlier last month released a five-minutes dance video that narrates the journey of a migrant who leaves the comfort of his home and travels to a distant land looking for a better future.
The dance video project ‘Pravasee’ by one of the most renowned Indian dance groups in New Zealand is a tribute to those migrants who not only sacrificed the warmth of their homeland and country but took upon a challenge looking for a new beginning for themselves and their families.
The project is funded by Creative NZ and supported by Arogya Mantra.
An Auckland dance troupe expresses the migrant journey through classical Indian dance.
While Covid-19 peaked in India in September 2020, over 11,000km from home a group of women skilled in classical Indian dancing - many who had recently moved to New Zealand for work and study - came together to share their migrant journeys through dance.
We spoke to them about their challenges of being a migrant in the year of the Coronavirus pandemic. When Rebecca Sabu took a loan of the equivalent of $60,000 NZD to study in New Zealand in late 2019, never would she have expected to be thrown into almost a year of online lectures amidst a global pandemic.
