Victor Ramos had moved to Lakewood 22 years ago from Mexico and, as a 43-year-old husband and father of five who worked in the area’s booming construction trade, he and his family were pillars of the township’s close-knit Latinx community.
But last summer Ramos was diagnosed with cancer of the gall bladder, which put him out of work and in the hospital for four months. It also forced his wife, Alma Ramos, to quit her job as a housekeeper in order to care for her husband as well as their three sons and two daughters, said 17-year Victor Ramos, the couple’s eldest child, a sophomore at Lakewood High School.
