this town is over and done with. nothing you can do to bring it back. it just makes me sad that we re perceived that way. we re making strides. folks want things to get better in this town. i m getting emotional. i am emotional about it. because we love each other. the majority of each other love each other very deeply. we want to see the town progress. just a small snapshot of selma today. we decided to dig into the archives and show you how nbc news covered the eventual successful march a few weeks later when voting right activists made it from selma to montgomery. reporter: the march from selma to montgomery has ended. the point has been made, the steps of the state capital have served as a forum for the negro protest in alabama against voter registration procedures which have kept him off the voting lists. we brought you this report to also show you this picture. this was taken after valeriani was injured covering the violence that preceded the marches.
poll workers, and why would you have these representatives, international representatives at u.s. elections? they ve been there since 2002, they skipped the 2008 election i guess they thought that one wasn t going to be so close, and they are here at this one because this is going to be a close election. but the idea that we ve got international observers here is absurd especially when you re talking about countries like bellaruse and kazakhstan. megyn: are they going into force anything? i mean are they just going to sit there like this is not the way we do it in bellaruse. they would have access to the actual voting list. this is what the osce which is in cooperation with the u.n. they want to look at voting lists. they want to check it also. that is absurd. we don t allow that in the united states of america, and the state departments where there is immunity here. megyn: can you just imagine, can you imagine, let me take to you houston, texas, where, you know our friends show up
potentially on the voting roles to make sure they don t vote. it s against the law for them to cast ballots in our elections. it s a database. critics claim culling through the names can lead to voter suppression. but we were told this morning that s not true. i expect to find noncitizens on our voting lists as you have in the past. as you may recall when we talked last time we found over a hundred individuals that were on the voting rules that were being removed. half of those, almost half had voted in previous elections. we are going to begin this process. i m going to review every single file at the beginning of this process to insure that due process is in place and everyone is treated fairly. the details for turning over the list has not been finalized. state officials will not be able to go through the entire list in time for the november elections. bill: how many noncitizens have
version of the bill is changed. we re not going to vote for this bill with that language in there. stupak s issue is the bill gives taxpayer subsidies to help people buy insurance policies and some of those policies can cover abortion. democrats believe in the vote were held tonight, house speaker nancy pelosi would not have the 217 votes she needs. in iraq, early voting is under way. no surprise. it s a messy process there. already marred with violence. now roadside bombs. we understand suicide attacks. reporter: when it comes to the iraqis they are not going to be heading toward the critical vote with two main concerns. one is the possibility that maybe there has been some sort of a mixup in voting lists. and the second is, of course, the reality of violence. they were lined up to vote when a suicide bomber in baghdad slipped into the crowd. nearly 6,200 candidates vying for just 325 seats. today iraq has almost 19 million
box. now, those boxes will not be opened until after the rest of the iraqi population has cast their vote on march 7th. all right. arwa, so where do we go from here in the immediate days ahead? well, wolf, the iraqi security forces most certainly will be stepping up their efforts. i think that when it comes to the iraqis, they are now going to be heading towards that critical vote with two main concerns. one is the possibility that maybe there is some sort of mix-up in voting lists, and the second is of course the reality of violence. let s point out that anything that happens that throws the legitimacy of the elections into question has the potential to be disastrous for iraq, and this is not a country nor a people who at this point can afford for anything more to go wrong. wolf? and the stakes are enormous for the the u.s., including all of the u.s. troops who are hoping to come home, and we will see if they do on schedule. arwa, thanks very much.
