the prism of halloween. with ellen davis of the national retail federation. when the economy is suffering, halloween spending soars. i m candy crowley. and this is state of the union. an economic trifecta thursday boosted the administration and maybe the president s re-election chances, too. new figures show the economy grew by 2.5% in the third quarter, almost double the growth in the previous quarter. and european leaders struck a deal to settle greek debt and bolster the euro. then world markets surged in response. wall street ending thursday up over 300 points. meanwhile, out on the campaign trail, the president tried to reconnect with voters where they are hurting. he launched a spate of initiatives he can execute without congressional approval helping homeowners with underwater mortgages, lowering student loan payments, training for veterans to work in the health care industry, and informational tools for small businesses. joining me now, senior campaign str
be permitted to vote. minnesota state law currently contradicts that. you have the right to vote if you re under guardianship, and only if a court takes it away. so that is against our minnesota constitution. my bill would restore the constitutional position and also just in case somebody is under guardianship and does have the ability to make an independent voting decision, it allows the court and the guardian to work together to give them back that right to vote. but usually the reason why you re under guardianship is that you are not competent. so i think the constitutional premise is the accurate one to start from. you happen to be the guardian of your own sister. you know, many would say that the right to vote is paramount, that you don t want people unfairly or incorrectly disenfranchised. absolutely not. we want to make sure when you re able to vote you get that vote. we also protect that right to vote, but that s right, i m a guardian myself. when i became aware of this, i
there s no way she can make an independent voting decision. if i took her to vote, if i said to mark it this way or that way, she would do exactly what i told her. it s important that we not put her in situations, in group homes, or any other living situation, where somebody else might manipulate her. so my law is designed to protect those who need that protection, but also restore the right to vote when they are capable of doing so. both ways it works. all right. mary kiffmyer thank you for joining us this morning. you introduced the legislation to protect the most vulnerable. we ll stay with this issue, because we re getting a lot of reaction around the country. mary kiffmyer of minnesota, thank you so much for joining us this morning. thanks. as i ve said, we ve gotten a lot of email. a couple of examples of some that stood out. quote, my cousin is mentally disabled. he was instructed how to vote. his family notified the police, as well as the local television station. no one
