gone into 2022 and in a much stronger position had he played the situation differently or decided not to run for re-election. to be fair, how bad is georgia s voter restriction law? so bad that major league baseball moved its all-star game to colorado. it feels a law predicated on a lie. as i said to the secretary, don t listen to me. listen to georgia s lieutenant republican governor duncan. i wonder of what you make of both the bar lowering and i m so glad he held firm against donald trump. i, too, think that was a heroic moment but there s as much danger in facilitating the enactment of voter restriction laws. it s important to note that the bar has already been lowered for a really long time. imposing voting restriction has been a tenant of republican policy long before donald trump.
it s as simple as that. so why give into his allies who insisted on a voter restriction law in the state and i hear you there were some good things in there. but the antifraud measures were predicated on a lie. there was no fraud. well, moral courage is in short supply sometimes and so sometimes people need to have gumption and lean into what is really important. and what s really important for me is being honest, making sure that i fight hard to follow the rule of law and the state laws and so i m going to continue to do that and you know, sometimes takes some moral courage, but the courage that it takes isn t anything like what the people in our armed services do. they re out there fighting for our freedom. they give their life for this country. that s true courage. we can t stand up to the truth of an election then we really are going to be in a lot of trouble so i m going to lean
the all-star game from your state because of the voter restriction law. did you support it, sir? moving, no, i wanted the all-star game to stay here. no, did you support the voter restriction law that was predicated on the lies? there are some good measures in there. number one is a signature match. was there any fraud in the 2020 election in georgia? there wasn t enough fraud to ever overturn the results. so why was any legislature, even if it was good, even necessary? because every two years, we update legislation to see what makes the most sense. there were a lot of bills that never saw the light of day because i guess leadership understood those were just way beyond what was required. but to make sure we moved and had a very objective way of identifying absentee voters, that s a very good thing. we ve moved to driver s license number and that s objective
there s some encouraging news to tell you about on this. house democrats have introduced a new voting rights bill named after the late john lewis that would restore and strengthen parts of the gutted voting rights act of 1965. let s add to our conversation our friend, the reverend al sharpton, the president of the national action network. matt dowd is still here. rev, first on what is under way in georgia, their voter restriction law was the first passed. it resulted in the boycott of major league baseball s all-star game. this, though, was the part of that law that a lot of people were most afraid of, undermining who counts the votes. talk about this step that they have taken to take control of elections in fulton county. we must first underscore that fulton county is a majority black district, so the racial element is clear. but one of the things that comes to mind when i heard about this
washington, d.c., because, just by chance, if we came together we would not only get the senate to hear us, we would also get them to act. this is a now-or-never moment for our country. the biggest divide among democrats today is over how far they re willing to go to protect the right to vote in america and to have everyone s vote count. over 400 voter suppression measures race through 49 state legislatures, the texas democrats who fled their state to prevent a voter restriction law from becoming law called in reinforcements today. they come in the form of over 100 other state lawmakers from nearly 30 states, some of whom you just heard speak at a rally earlier today, targeting chuck schumer and trying to convince him to cancel the august recess until the senate passes federal voting rights legislation. democrats and voting rights advocates sounding the alarm on the future of our democracy, a message echoed last night by the president. the single most important thing that we have t
