mcdonald s they put a piece of paper in as your tray liner and you can register to vote on that tray liner and you can go to the board of directions and find ketchup-stained registration forms i imagine still. but we ve seen this secretary of state and more than that we ve seen nationally republicans go after voting rights, whether it s eliminate sunday vote, whether it s restricting more absentee voting, whether it s redistricting of course, and whether it s these voter purges. ohio s may have been the worst in the country. we now, the president not only that case that was wrongly decided. the president of the united states has just selected two appellate judges. nominees to the pre-existing condition ruling. we re fighting on this ruling because i know that if the rulings like this stand it s one more move, one more piece that republicans are going to continue to go after to suppress the vote. they won elections by
census data shows that racial minorities are overrepresented in the most common last names. same is true for latinos and asian americans. then there s the issue that you just talked about of the private vigilanteism of organizations sending people out on election day to intimidate and frighten people into not voting. then, of course, voter purges. that is using some of these lists and inaccurate information to purge people from lists, to purge people who haven t voted in the last election from lists. there s a case this week about whether or not it s legal for ohio to begin to purge people from lists because they haven t voted. we are so glad you that you remain vigilant. thank you so much for being here. coming up at the top of the
alarms. let s look at what they have done. the recusal from the russia piece. support for voter purges. signaling attacks on affirmative action. there s a laundry list of things that raise alarms for all kinds of zifcivil rights groups. within that context it makes sense we should be rejecting this. they stacked the deck today. they overloaded so we really couldn t get the kinds of questions and answers we needed out of this particular appointment. it looks as if the doj is trending towards being the opposite of what it s designed to be from its leadership all the way through. they will be removing about 120 positions from the department of justice. all of this on the week where we should be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the forming of the civil rights division within the department of justice. that was formed because there was a recognition that this type of hate and this type of discrimination required a federal response.
bases from homeland security and other places. that s kind of like the cross check program that secretary of state kansas secretary of state has been running which has been proven to have a bis proportionate influence. but never threat disproportionately. because of the kinds of names that are likely to show up in the database. so everything about this commission from the president s statements about it, the formation of it, the membership, the plans for the commission, all of it leads to one conclusion that this is created to do the work that the piecemeal cases that we have been winning in federal court by the way on voter suppression and voter i.d., it s designed to take all of that piecemeal work and to combine it and put it together into one national platform that voter suppressers can draw on to continue their efforts through voter purges and other means. this is a reconfiguration of what happened during the bush
arrive in this country. there have been voter purges in this country. there are attempts to not accept people into registration polls. there are attempts to make it much more burdensome for people to register to vote and with voter id laws to make it much more burdensome for them to vote. you mentioned texas and the fear of that. but also not just with texas, if that is the scenario in that given state, could you see that happening with others following suit? sure. the amazing thing about texas, though, that as recently as december 18th, the department of justice had filed a brief not just claiming but arguing very, very strongly that the law was passed with discriminatory intent. i want to ask you about north carolina with the federal appeals court striking down that voter id law saying its provisions deliberately targeted african-americans with almost surgical precision in an effort
