One of the best gifts a person can give around the holidays is the gift of time. If you have it in your heart to volunteer this holiday season, here are a few places in the Sioux Falls area that could use your help.
Helpline Center Looking for Mentors & Park Lovers
The Helpline Center has a history of connecting people with volunteer opportunities that change lives and our communities. Last year they became supporters of the Sioux 52 Mentoring Initiative which encourages everyone to consider becoming a mentor.
This week they are seeking people who want to be part of a new pilot virtual mentoring program and also to help a long list of children waiting for someone to become part of their lives.
School-Based Virtual Mentoring Supervisor - These positions involve you monitoring virtual mentoring sessions in three of our Sioux Falls elementary schools - Lowell, Garfield, and Hawthorne. This activity occurs over the children s lunch hours and your time commitment would be about two-and-a-half hours.
Helpline Center Can Help You Change Your World
Much like everything else in life, change comes in small increments. Unlike hitting the Powerball jackpot, making your life better, or changing someone else s life, can take time and effort.
If you re a person who would like to give both, the Helpline Center is a place that can point you in any number of directions. One call to 211, or a stop at their website, and you can see exactly where your time and talents can be put to good use.
Any number of studies have shown that when you make an effort to help someone else, by that very act, you are changing your own life for the better. You are staying connected to something important to your own well-being.
Helpline Center Calling for Help Feeding the Hungry
For most of us, thinking about our next meal doesn t involve much more than thinking about what s in the fridge, the pantry, or which drive-through food we re craving. For our homeless population, working-poor families, and less fortunate neighbors, their next meal may be a long time coming.
When your choices are limited by having little or no income, how and when you re going to feed yourself, or your family isn t an easy-to-answer question. Here in Sioux Falls, we have several places where hungry people can find their next meal. What is needed, is people to donate, prepare, and help serve these meals.
