Volkswagen hopes to leap into the lead for electric vehicle range, recharging, weight and safety by introducing the holy grail of electrification – the solid-state battery – as soon as 2024.
Volkswagen’s $US300 million ($A396m) investment in California-based battery start-up QuantumScape is set to pay off enormously, pole-vaulting the group’s premium brands like Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley well beyond Tesla’s range claims.
While the Volkswagen Group’s EV assault has begun with lithium-ion battery technology, solid-state batteries could give it up to 50 per cent more energy density, delivering up to 1000km of range, with 80 per cent recharges in just 15 minutes.

Volkswagen Group could get access to advanced battery cells that have the potential to increase electric vehicle ranges by 80 percent as early as 2024, bolstering its efforts to surpass Tesla as segment leader.
Developed by the U.S. startup QuantumScape, the second-generation cell technology relies on a solid rather than liquid electrolyte and lithium metal instead of graphite for the anode. If it can be industrialized at scale, the two companies could collaborate to build a 20 gigawatt-hour factory, QuantumScape said.

Volkswagen is launching in five German cities - Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, Hannover, Salzgitter and Kassel - a new pilot project to test and gather practical experience of using new
22 kW DC wallbox, developed by Volkswagen Group Components to eventually start series production in the future.
Since the currently available ID. models are equipped with 7.2 kW single-phase or 11 kW three-phase on-board chargers in Europe, the switch to 22 kW would cut charging time in half.
