The Kīlauea Summit Area and Corridor Management Plan will identify management strategies and solutions to reduce conflicts among cars, buses, motorcyles, bicyclists (including e-bikes) and pedestrians on park roads and trails that traverse the popular and often-crowded summit of Kīlauea volcano.
Contractors have fenced off Jaggar Museum, the former US Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory buildings at Uēkahuna and part of the parking lot.
The plan provides for the continuation of air tours at reduced levels over the park and within a half-mile of its boundary to protect natural and cultural resources, wilderness, the integrity of Native Hawaiian sacred sites and ceremonial areas, and visitor experiences.
While Kīlauea volcano in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is not erupting, more signs of increased unrest are occurring as earthquakes spike in the upper East Rift Zone near Puhimau Crater. As a precaution, the park has closed Chain of Craters Road at the intersection near Devastation parking lot and nearby areas.
