Aboriginal Australian Cosmetics: Brand owner sees global potential for but hurdles remain

Aboriginal Australian skin care brands are battling a lack of ingredient sources and pandemic-driven logistical issues – but the founder of Natural Cover is still optimistic about the sector’s growth potential. Natural Cover was founded in 2015 by Sharon Maley, a descendent of the Wadjigan people, or Bulgul, from the Northern Territory. Maley, a qualified beauty therapist, used traditional knowledge passed down from her mother and grandmother to develop a range of skin care products that feature indigenous ingredients such as Frangipani and Aloe Vera in its formulations. In the last five years, Natural Cover has largely been a local business operating within Darwin.

UK beauty receives government recognition with Personal Care Services team in BEIS Department

The UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has formed a Personal Care Services team to represent the beauty industry officially at government-level (Getty Images) The British beauty industry has secured formal, sector-specific representation within the UK government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) – a move industry leaders says finally gives the sector the spotlight it deserves. The Personal Care Services dedicated team, formed last week within the UK government’s BEIS Department​, was created after a lengthy campaign from the British Beauty Council, the UK Spa Association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology and the National Hair & Beauty Federation. The in-government team was made up of four officials; a director, deputy director and two members who would be industry’s primary contact and voice on any future UK policy matters.
