Town of Clarkstown and District Attorney Hold DWI Accident Scene Demonstration

After two recent teenage drunk driving related deaths, several departments came together to host an event intended to raise awareness of the dangers of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and distracted. The Clarkstown Police Department, New City Fire Department, New City Ambulance Corp, STAT Med Evac, Higgins Funeral Home, and Clarkstown Town Justice David Ascher, presented a mock DWI accident scene at Zukor Park on Wednesday. “Our communities are still reeling from these losses,” said Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann. “We have to learn from them.” This slideshow requires JavaScript. On April 24, Suffern High School student Jacqueline Zangrilli, 16, died in a DWI crash on Route 202. The driver and three other passengers were seriously injured, and the driver is facing charges, including vehicular manslaughter. A wake will held today for 16-year-old Vladyslav Hvalyk at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City at 4 p.m. His funeral is set for tomorrow in Spring Valley. State police say bail reform has led to tragedy. Troopers say an ex-con arrested on drug charges in Sullivan County was released. Then, he allegedly killed a Sheriff s Deputy in South Carolina. Police members say changes are needed to bail reform and that this could have been avoided.

Services set for 16-year-old killed in drunk driving crash News 12 Staff Updated on:May 11, 2021, 7:28am EDT Family and friends are gathering to say a final farewell to Clarkstown North High School junior Vladyslav Hvalyk this week. Visiting hours are tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Michael J Higgins Funeral Home in New City. The funeral is Thursday in Spring Valley. The 16-year-old died last Thursday after he was a passenger in car that crashed on Congers Road in New City. The alleged drunk driver, 18-year-old Alan Mendoza, is facing a handful of felonies, including aggravated vehicular homicide and second-degree manslaughter.  Investigators say the crash also seriously injured a 17-year-old girl. She is Mendoza s girlfriend, according to his attorney.

Clarkstown police said he was in a Mitsubishi Lancer that was being driven by Alan Mendoza, 18, who is accused of driving while intoxicated. Three vehicles were involved and five people were injured, including a 17-year-old girl who was also in the Lancer and was seriously injured, police said. The Clarkstown Central School District said all three teenagers are students at Clarkstown North High School. They also attended Rockland BOCES Career and Technical Education Center classes. There are no words to express the pain and sense of loss to our community as a beautiful young life was taken from us, the Clarkstown district said in a statement.  Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

Police: 1 dead in multivehicle crash involving 3 Clarkstown North High School students News 12 Staff Updated on:May 07, 2021, 5:56pm EDT An 18-year-old driver is facing charges following a crash that killed his friend and injured his girlfriend on Thursday. The driver was allegedly driving drunk at the time of the crash on Congers Road in New City around 11 p.m. Caution tape was still outside of Clarkstown North High School Friday as the community remembers the student who died in thecrash. 

 The 16-year-old victim has been identified as Clarkstown North High School junior Vladyslav Hvalyk. News 12 was told he was also a criminal justice student at Rockland BOCES.
