Early in the morning of May 11, CCTV cameras in a quiet suburban district of the Russian city of Kazan picked up a skinny young man, dressed all in black, walking purposefully down a leafy street, shotgun in hand.
Unchallenged by passers-by, the gunman approached Gymnasium No. 175, a large public school of over a thousand pupils serving the western outskirts of the capital of Russia’s republic of Tatarstan. When asked for his credentials, he opened fire on a security guard, before storming inside.

Moscow: At least seven people were killed Tuesday, most of them children, in a shooting at a high school in the central Russian city of Kazan, officials and news agency reports said.
Officials said at least one gunman had been involved and detained, though there were unconfirmed reports of two attackers including one who had been killed.
Putin expressed his “deep condolences” to the victims and has ordered a review of gun control legislation, the Kremlin said.
Police said they detained the gunman approximately one hour after initial reports of the shooting.
Seven of the dead were children in the eighth grade, Tatarstan regional leader Rustam Minnikhanov told reporters. He said two adults, including a teacher, also died.
Another 20 people were hospitalised, including 18 children. Six of them were in intensive care, Lazzat Khaidarov, a spokesman for the regional authorities, told AFP.
The ages of the injured people varied from between seven and 62.
