EU spells out criteria for green investment in new taxonomy rules

The European Commission on Wednesday (21 April) unveiled a first batch of implementing rules under the EU’s sustainable finance taxonomy, spelling out detailed technical criteria that companies need to comply with in order to win a green investment label in Europe. The taxonomy rule book introduces a labelling system for investment that could divert hundreds of billions in funds to industries and companies that win a “sustainable” label for all or part of their activities. It covers 13 sectors, including renewable energy, transport, forestry, manufacturing, buildings, insurance and even the arts, which together account for nearly 80% of EU greenhouse gas emissions, the European Commission said.

EU: Six-Month Freeze on Tariffs to Ease Airbus-Boeing Aid Dispute

MIAMI – During an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis indicated that the EU was willing to propose a six-month freeze on tariffs in order to ease the ongoing dispute between Airbus and Boeing on state aid. The tariff is applied to billions worth of commodities going from wine to cheese, cars, and airplanes. This new measure will go beyond the four months moratorium already in force since last March and intends to send a strong signal towards ending a more than a decade-long feud opposing Boeing and Airbus in WTO (World Trade Organization) discussions on state aid that both sides consider illegal.

NEW DELHI: India and EU are looking at an ambitious interim trade agreement, a move that might be announced during the India-EU summit scheduled for May 8 in Portugal. The two sides are also discussing an investment pact, which would be important for India to attract more investment. A statement by the EU on Monday said, the two ministers, Piyush Goyal and Vladis Dombrovskis “tasked experts to look into the feasibility of resuming work on trade and investment agreements; new areas of cooperation (regulatory aspects and resilient value chains); as well as enhancing collaboration on WTO reform.” The optimistic outcome of the first India-EU high level dialogue on trade and investment held over the weekend stems largely from the fact that India appears to be taking a more proactive approach to a trade deal with the EU.
