Washington Island student, Door County teachers win Kohl Foundation awards
MILWAUKEE - A Washington Island High School senior and two Door County teachers won awards from the Herb Kohl Foundation.
Julia Valentincic of Washington Island received a $10,000 Student Initiative Scholarship to be received upon graduation this spring; and Jessica Meacham, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) teacher at Southern Door Elementary School in Brussels, and Lisa Mueller, a first-grade teacher at St. John Bosco Catholic School in Sturgeon Bay, each were named for a Teacher Fellowship by the foundation, which carries a $6,000 award.
The Student Initiative Scholarship is offered to 100 high schools in Wisconsin every seven years, with Washington Island being chosen for this year. Recipients are chosen by their schools to recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but hav
