Cannon encourages radio stations to apply for funding to assist them during Covid-19

3rd February 2021 - Ciaran Cannon TD Independent radio stations should apply for a special round of Covid funding to assist them in providing important information during this challenging period, a Fine Gael TD has said. Deputy Ciaran Cannon has welcomed details of the €2.5 million funding through the Sound and Vision Scheme, with this special round providing support to the independent commercial radio sector to produce programming to strengthen public awareness of COVID-19. Deputy Cannon, Fine Gael’s Spokesperson on Media, Arts & Culture, said, “This is a very important funding announcement for a sector that has been doing exemplary work all during the pandemic, while at the same time coping with serious losses in revenue.

Applications now welcome for special BAI funding

February 3, 2021 - 1:14 pm Commercial radio stations can now apply to the BAI for amounts from €40,000 up to €100,000 in a special round of the Sound & Vision Scheme. The purpose of this special round is to provide support to the independent commercial radio sector to produce programming which will strengthen public awareness and understanding of COVID-19. The COVID-19 Funding Initiative is being implemented in response to a request by the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, TD, who secured an additional €2.5 million for the BAI’s Sound & Vision Scheme to support this round. Funding is available to cover costs directly related to the achievement of enhanced public awareness and understanding of the COVID-19 health emergency, including costs that support the achievement of these outcomes.

The Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI), the organisation representing Ireland’s independent radio stations has welcomed an announcement this week by Minister Catherine Martin that an additional €2.5 million in funding for the sector is to be provided early next year through the Sound and Vision Scheme administered by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. Acknowledging the importance of independent radio to providing reliable news and information to citizens and bringing communities together during the pandemic, the Minister said that the fund is being allocated to ensure that independent radio can continue to deliver their services during these difficult times when advertising revenues have been reduced.
