Slovakia's opposition figure and ex-diplomat Ivan Korcok confounded opinion polls to score a first-round victory in the presidential election on Saturday, edging ahead of lower house speaker Peter Pellegrini, an ally of pro-Russian Prime Minister Robert Fico. A run-off between the two men will be held on 6 April.
The message is simple. Poland wants top European partners to deliver an equal share in defence of what it has committed on its own. The European security bill will not be waved through by hard talk alone. Berlin and Paris must know that they would also pay dearly for the cost of inaction.
