Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 7 (ANI): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Saturday has directed the Maharashtra Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta to conduct a thorough inquiry into the abominable phenomenon of the continuance of virginity tests among the people of Kanjarbhat community.
A report for its record with regard to the steps taken by the state government to curb such a custom from being followed will also be submitted, according to a press release.
The order was passed by the apex human rights watchdog, adjudicating a petition filed by rights campaigner and civil liberties lawyer and Supreme Court advocate, Radhakanta Tripathy.

KARACHI, Pakistan â A court in the northern city of Lahore in Pakistan has abolished so-called virginity tests, which women are subjected to in sexual assault cases, setting a precedent for the practice to be potentially outlawed nationwide.
The practice â banned in neighboring Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh â continues to take place in Pakistan and more than a dozen other countries where it is seen as a measure of virtue and of whether a woman is trustworthy.
